Strengthening Our DEI Voice: Black Health and Wellness
In celebration of Black History Month, join our panel for a discussion on Black Health and Wellness. We will begin the session with a guided meditation and then explore the following questions.
- How do we prioritize Black Health and Wellness in the second year of a global pandemic that doesn’t appear to be ending soon?
- How do we navigate racial trauma and heal from it, as the world continues to debate the value of Black lives?
- How can we create safe spaces and foster environments of healing?
- What healthy avenues can you incorporate into your daily life that help you cope and manage your stressors and anxiety as it relates to racial injustice?
The panel will be moderated by Andrea C. Smith, AMADC’s President-Elect, and will feature:

Valerie M. Harvey, MD, MPH, FAAD
President-elect, Skin of Color Society
Valerie M. Harvey, MD, MPH, FAAD, earned her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Virginia. She completed her residency and Chief Residency at the University of
Maryland Medical Center. She later received a Master of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Harvey is a Fellow of the American Academy of
Dr. Harvey specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of pigmentary disorders such as hyperpigmentation and melasma, as well as other skin conditions which disproportionately
impact minority patients. Her past research efforts have focused on studying gaps in melanoma outcomes and the use of dermatology services among the underserved. Dr. Harvey has
authored many scientific articles and book chapters, and has lectured at national medical meetings on these topics.
Dr. Harvey is an active leader in the dermatologic community. She is the co-Director for Hampton University Skin of Color Research Institute. She is the President-elect of the Skin of
Color Society (2021-2022) and serves on numerous boards and committees for the American Academy of Dermatology. She is Past President of the Virginia Dermatology Society.
Olufunke Owolabi, PhD
Senior Director, Employee Engagement and Development, Freddie Mac
Olufunke Owolabi is senior director of multifamily employee engagement and development at Freddie Mac. She leads the comprehensive strategy that champions activities and best practices in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). She also has oversight for employee communications, culture and learning. Olufunke joined Freddie Mac in 2012, and with nearly two decades of experience, she works across the business to optimize Freddie Mac Multifamily's culture, most recently shaping and driving our employee-focused Diversity Speaks Series and learning and discovery journey focused on allyship, anti-racism and unconscious bias to build diversity competence, while empowering and inspiring staff to lead more inclusively.
Andrea C. Smith
Andrea C. Smith is a highly accomplished senior marketing executive with over twenty-five years of experience. She is the President-Elect for the board of directors for the American Marketing Association, Washington DC Chapter.
Andrea is currently the Director of Marketing at AARP Services, Inc. For nearly sixteen years, she has been instrumental in leading a team of high performing marketers to help drive partner marketing and communications strategies.
She also has twelve years of experience as an adjunct professor at DeVry and Keller Universities teaching marketing and business classes.
Andrea holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and an MBA from Strayer University.
She is originally from northeast Louisiana and currently resides in northern Virginia.
Owner of Millie Loves Yoga
Millita Wright is a certified Yoga Instructor with experience teaching since 2018 in the following formats: Power Vinyasa (200HR), Yoga Nidra/Meditation (50 hours), Hot Power Fusion (200HR), and Yoga Sculpt (High-intensity Yoga -60HR).
In addition, she is pursuing a certification to become a Clinical Yoga Therapist (500HR and IAYT Certification) to enable work within clinical settings including rehabilitation facilities, hospitals, and private practice offices.
Millita is located in Washington, D.C., and offers virtual classes (yoga and meditation), corporate wellness seminars, and coaching.
