WASHINGTON, DC – November 2, 2011 The American Marketing Association, DC Chapter (AMADC), the third largest regional chapter of the American Marketing Association announced today a seasonal initiative with the See Forever Foundation/Maya Angelou Public Charter School located in Washington, DC.
A group of students in the 2011-2012 ninth grade class of the Maya Angelou Public Charter School, one of a multi-campus collaboration of charter schools and schools for disconnected youth began the year with a robust, hands-on initiative focused on personal enrichment and community awareness. During the eleven week program entitled a Semester of Service: Addressing Hunger, students focused on the importance of giving back, nutrition and how to eat healthily while on a budget.
On Friday, November 18, 2011 students will conclude their semester-long project with a grand banquet featuring recipes they created based in part on the knowledge gained during the initiative. “In addition, the banquet hall will have presentation displays to help educate the community on nutrition and world hunger developed by students during their quest for a healthier lifestyle,” remarks Kara Winerman, ninth grade teacher coordinating with students on this event. Local members of the community, volunteers and students will be invited to attend and will be asked to bring at least one canned good or nonperishable food item for their admittance. All food gathered during the banquet will be distributed to local food pantries and shelters by the students after the banquet.
AMADC, representing over 800 marketing professionals in the Washington metro area will provide volunteers during the event to assist students. In addition, marketing volunteers from the association provided students with marketing education to help promote their good works to the local community, which included student-created instructional videos uploaded to YouTube.
To help connect local marketing professionals with this extremely impactful initiative, the AMADC board issued a challenge to its members. “We are delighted to announce that AMADC will match pound-for-pound the amount of canned goods/non-perishables delivered to the banquet on November 18 by AMADC members,” stated Chris Lorence, Vice President of Giving and AMADC volunteer. “This initiative is one of the most important efforts we’ve undertaken in the past year, and we are so pleased to be working with the amazing students of the Maya Angelou Schools,” noted Mike Gardner, president of AMADC.
