Note from the Board
|
|
As AMADC’s 2010-2011 fiscal year draws to a close with many notable
achievements and success stories, I would like to thank the board, our
volunteers and our members. For the second
consecutive year, AMADC has experienced substantial membership growth,
easily surpassing 800 members for the first time in three years and
hitting record highs among the 78 chapters of AMA during the Spring and
Fall membership drives. This success is directly attributable to our
volunteer leaders.
AMADC also saw
record attendance of almost 1,500 marketers attending monthly programs
and networking events. We kicked off the year with Seth Godin, prolific
author and marketer, followed by Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos and author
of Delivering Happiness in an event that attracted almost 200
marketers. The chapter launched its first philanthropy event this year
raising almost $1,000 for AMADC’s inaugural college scholarship fund
and held several exclusive CMO roundtable events
catering to the highest level of marketers in our industry. Indeed our
various programs delivered industry expertise to all levels of
marketers.
We will end the
year with our signature networking event, AMADC Power on the Potomac,
at the House of Sweden on the Georgetown waterfront. Here, we will take
time to honor Seth Goldman, President and TeaEO of Honest
Tea, as AMADC’s 2011 Marketing Hall of Fame winner. We hope you can
join us to celebrate a most amazing year.
It has been an honor and a
pleasure to serve you and to work with you to achieve our chapter
goals. As I turn over the reins to our incoming president, Mike
Gardner, on July 1st, I feel confident that the AMADC is well poised
for continued success under his leadership. Thank you for allowing me
to represent you for
the past year as
the President of AMADC.

Chapter Highlights
|
 |
|
The AMADC is
proud to deliver integrated, strategic and tactical marketing education
on current trends and issues that apply to virtually any business or
organization.
Networking Heats up at Hudson Restaurant
As the thermostat reached record-breaking temperatures, Marketers
connected at Hudson Restaurant
in Washington, DC on May 9 over cool drinks and lively conversation. In
addition to heavy bar appetizers, such as calamari, bar tots, and house
made pretzels, guests sampled gourmet brick oven pizzas while
socializing in the West End’s hot spot.
New to the scene?
Every month AMADC offers members and non-members the opportunity to network at
some of the trendiest spots in DC while enjoying free appetizers and
happy-hour drink specials. Whether you are looking to get involved with
AMADC, build business alliances or find your next great employee, this
is one event you can’t afford to leave off your calendar.
Marketers Acquire Keys to Online Cause Marketing Success
Marketing
professionals
from a variety of industries came out to hear Sharyn Collinson,
Managing Director of Fixation Marketing, and Jon Gonzalez,
Chief
Development Officer of Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN),
discuss fund-raising, event planning and nonprofit marketing
strategies. The May 19 event was held at the lovely Georgetown
University conference hall in Arlington, VA.
According to
survey
research on event marketing, 90 percent of all generated revenue comes
from event fundraisers and the remaining 10 percent from virtual
marketing campaigns. Studies show that the risks involved in the
planning and execution of live events are fairly low compared to a
virtual marketing event hosted solely online. Additionally, live events
encourage networking between the client and the vendor.

Event Marketing and Relationship Building
Online cause marketing programs are popping up everywhere and it’s
never been more crucial to get it right. On May 24, Katya
Andresen, COO
of Network for Good and author of Robin Hood Marketing: Stealing
Corporate Savvy to Sell Just Causes shared insights and best
practices for effective online cause marketing with an intimate group
at Herman Miller Showroom in DC.
Many companies
are engaging their
audiences around charity in new and innovative ways online – especially
on social media platforms – and boldly linking their brands to
philanthropy and social responsibility. So what’s the secret? What
separates one company’s campaign from another? Under Katya’s guidance,
attendees examined several online cause marketing campaigns and
discussed how to inspire people to act and to do good in this
challenging environment. In addition to sharing case studies, Katya
divulged keys to sound goal-setting and online cause marketing success,
including suitability, authenticity, transparency and selling point.
Before wrapping up the lunch hour session, marketers were provided a
handy checklist for running an effective online campaign.
Blogging in the Blogosphere: Do you have what it takes?
How To: Talk to
Bloggers was a phenomenal, lunch-hour seminar held on May 26 at the
Washington DC Economic Partnership. The event attracted a diverse range
of marketing communications professionals.
Featured speaker,
Jonathan Rick,
Senior Strategist of Rock Creek Strategic Marketing, is a serious
Blogger with a background in public affairs. His superb online
communication skills have landed him numerous accolades from local
politicians to the media. In his role, Jonathan uses his talents to
help clients navigate the complex world of social media and the
Blogosphere. Jonathan is truly in a league of his own when it comes to
knowing the ins and outs of the Web. His e-strategies have helped a
variety of clients, including the federal government, nonprofits, and
the general public. His articles have been published in What We Think:
Young Voters Speak Out (2004), on social media blogs, TechPresident, K
Street Café, GovFresh, PRWeek and Politico.
Blogging is a
term widely used today. People blog about their aspirations, interests,
hobbies – really anything and everything under the sun. The invention
of the World Wide Web, has transformed the way people communicate and
share information. Individuals from all sectors of the world blog to be
heard! The passion that rests at the hands of the blogger shows the
inner urge of our popular media culture to be heard. A voice of anger,
passion, love, or hate awaiting its digital signature and approval from
the public with a simple click of a mouse. Blogging is a form of
self-expression in its rawest form of human emotion and intellect.

How To:
Use Social, Mobile and Local Marketing to Drive Customers and Profit
Maisha
Walker, President of Message Medium and Inc. Magazine’s
Internet Strategist talked to attendees about how businesses are
successfully using Foursquare, Groupon, Facebook, Twitter, Google
Places to drive real traffic and real revenue. No matter what your
industry, business or role, marketers use social media tools to
broadcast their messages, establish awareness of expertise, access
people, stay in touch/build relationships, expose valuable new ideas
and organize opportunities to connect. Before jumping into social media
campaigns, consider the following five things:
- Campaign goals
- What to publish
- Resources to create
unique content
- Tools to spread your
word
- Ability to track, tweak
and repeat
Sending out one article or update a day is sufficient to stay top of
mind with your audience as long as you are consistent. Whether you use
one individual or a team of marketers, maintain one voice, follow your
clearly defined social media policy and give each individual a unique
username and password to access the company account, so that when a
person leaves, they aren’t taking valuable company assets with them.
For individuals wondering how to use social media to further their
professional career, “listen in” on Linked In, join MeetUps in other
cities, and connect with anyone who doesn’t seem creepy so that you
maximize the reach of your networks.

Interview Secret: Know the Right Questions To Ask
Most interview
preparation books are filled with sample questions that you’ll have to
answer during an interview. While it’s certainly important to know how
to answer tough interview questions, it’s equally important to know how
to ASK questions in an interview. There are three good reasons to be
prepared to ask great questions during interviews.
- To uncover the
interviewer’s hiring motives.
- To demonstrate
your interest and intelligence.
- To uncover any
unspoken concerns or “red flags.”
