Note From the Board

2011 continues to be a time when we each have to do more with less and still find time for our own professional development. No organization is more aware of these challenges than AMADC. We have dedicated ourselves to creating programs and events that meet the needs of our members by providing timely and actionable professional development and career advancement opportunities.

Wrapping up 2010, AMADC held an average of 5 sessions each month for marketers with various levels of experience across industries. Yes! That is almost 60 programs each year! In 2011, we promise to continue to bring the same value to marketers through our education, speaker and networking series.

Call for 2011-2012 AMADC Board Nominations

It’s that time of year! The DC Chapter of the American Marketing Association is seeking members interested in running for positions on the 2011-2012 Board of Directors. The two prerequisites for candidacy are: Candidates must be an active AMADC member in addition to having served on an AMADC committee.

All qualified candidates will be submitted to a nominating committee for review. The nominating committee will then select one nominee for each board position. It is possible that the nominating committee will choose not to nominate any candidate for an open board position if they do not feel that any of the candidates meet the needs or qualifications necessary to effectively serve the chapter.

Online Brand Listening

Angela Hausman , Ph. D., Associate Professor of Marketing at Howard University and owner of Hausman and Associates, walked marketers through the process of creating an online listening post in order to monitor brand mentions in blogs and online media, including social media. The lunch hour How-To Series session, uncovered why you should listen, how you should listen and what you should be listening for, backed by relevant case studies and examples.

Must-Know Social Media Trends

On January 25, fellow social media gurus Jonathan Salem Baskin, author of Histories of Social Media, and Jennifer Abernathy, America’s Sales Stylist, SHE-EO of the Sales Lounge and author of The Idiots Guide to Social Media, joined us for a speaker series luncheon. Must-Know Trends

Jonathan and Jennifer discussed the role of social media in our modern, and as it turns out medieval, society. Baskin’s take on social media may surprise some as it relates directly back to the formation of society during the Middle Ages.

His informative presentation highlighted the similarities between what we have come to know as “social media” with that of the simple, village lives of our ancestors.

CMO Roundtable

Later that evening, Jonathan joined AMADC’s CMO Roundtable to talk about the role of social media in modern and medieval society. He discussed how communities are not by definition permanent but by their nature bring individuals together to share and then they go away. Must-Know Trends

This was true throughout history and currently today. Further challenging current social media trends, he highlighted that liking an issue on Facebook does not make for consumer engagement, as engagement requires meaning and purpose. Digital marketing allows marketers to directly connect to customers but marketers should not presume the result is a consumer connection with a brand.

The connection is the brand and branding is an action we perform. A great example of this is Old Spice. Old Spice understands the dynamics of purchase behavior and markets to women while not alienating men. The connection to the brand is “need.”

AMADC Hosts 2011 Dynamic Mid-Atlantic Retreat

Approximately 40 of the AMA’s Mid-Atlantic’s Chapter Executives gathered in Washington, D.C., February 5-6 at the Carlyle Suites hotel to collaborate and connect with ideas on everything from membership to programming and operations. Mid-Atlantic Retreat

The chapters represented beyond D.C. included Philadelphia, Baltimore, Central, VA, Triangle, Richmond, Hampton Roads, and Raleigh-Durham. Jessica Kennedy, Professional Chapters Council members and Jennifer Billings from International Headquarters provided key insight from AMA.

AMADC's board was well represented with President Christie Susko, President-elect Mike Gardner, Treasurer Karen Alston, Membership Vice President Angela Brown and Marketing Communications Vice President Patty Briotta in attendance. Gardner was the key architect behind the weekend's activities.

Brian Crum AMADC would like to recognize Bryan Crum, Virginia Satellite Socials Director. Bryan has been an active volunteer with AMADC since he joined in 2002.

He’s contributed in a number or roles, most recently launching the inaugural Satellite Social program in Virginia last year. It was Bryan’s efforts that pioneered the way for this successful program, which draws almost 40 marketers to each neighborhood event.

Launching a Marketing Dashboard

During a two-day Data and Dashboards workshop, January 21-22, marketers learned how to measure the effectiveness of the mix of online/offline marketing programs and dollars being spent. Led by James Clark, co-founder of Room 214 and Wendy Hofstetter, Group Practice Director at Room 214, a leading social media agency and developers of customer marketing dashboards, this intensive seminar taught mid- to senior- level marketers how to gather, filter, curate and visualize the data that matters most for assessing ROI.
